Pharmacy Technician Externships

An externship is another way of saying a guaranteed internship. When you enroll in our pharmacy education course at Southern Careers Institute in Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, or Brownsville, you will be able to take two externships to gain the practice and experience you need to begin working after graduation. Here is a quick summary to help you know what you can expect when you complete externships as part of a pharmacy technician program.

How to Find Pharmacy Technician Externships

Our externships are your chance to utilize the knowledge you have gained from your pharmacy technician course and apply them to a real work environment. You will observe and participate in a range of activities, demonstrating that you are able to apply the skills you learned in the classroom. You will also be required to complete skill sheets, competency check sheets, evaluations, time-sheets, journals, and other paperwork. Throughout your externships, you will need to make regular contact with your instructor to discuss topics relevant to your on-the-job experience and professionalism. In addition to the required activities, your instructor may assign you other work related to projects and theory covered in the course, to provide you with additional practice or refresher training. Your final grade is made up of 50 percent completion externship hours and 50 percent student performance evaluation. You must receive at least 70 percent to pass the course.

Externship I

Externship I consists of 78 hours of training over three weeks and is worth 2.5 quarter credit hours. To be eligible for Externship I, you need to successfully complete 48 credits in your pharmacy technician program or receive director of education approval.

Externship II

Once you have satisfactorily completed Externship I, you can begin Externship II. This second externship takes 90 hours, spread over 3 weeks, and is worth 3 quarter credit hours. Once again, the externship involves no lectures nor lab work; it is pure practical experience.
